I'm looking for a new coffee maker, but finding conflicting reports on what I thought was going to be a great machine, the Cuisinart Grind and Brew. Now I don't know what to get. I know I don't want a press coffee maker and preferably one with an automatic setting for morning coffee when I get up at 5:00 AM. Is there a grind and brew out there that might be what I'm looking for?

How would one go about cleaning ants out of a coffee maker?
I thought I had the ant problem in my dorm room under control until I decided to make a pot of tea with my coffee maker. I wen to check on it while it was brewing and found literally hundreds of ants in my pot and on the inside of the machine. Thankfully none of them were alive, but it goes without saying that I was completely grossed out! I keep the coffee pot impeccably clean and it has actually never seen a filter or a ground of coffee in its short life, as I only use it for tea. I never use sugar in the pot, and I always thoroughly wash the machine and allow it to dry before returning it to the counter. Some days I might see 5 ants in my tea, and other days it might be closer to 100. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of them, or better yet, why they picked my coffee pot as their new burial ground?
Rinse it through with 1 c of white vinegar run through the brewing cycle. Then fill it up with water and run it through again 3 x. That will do it.
Perhaps someone poured tea with sugar or honey into the pot to re-warm it, or used a spiced tea and re-warmed it in the pot. Either way, something got it in there, or someone.

how can i make the best tasting coffee?
i already buy & grind my own beans. i keep about a weeks worth in an airtight (with a breather) container out, and freeze the rest in the same type of container. i guess i need tips on how to brew it, what to use to brew it... filter, coffe maker vs. french press etc. thanks

Congrats on the buying and grinding your own beans. Since you are storing and freezing I am assuming you are buying fresh roast (within 14 days of roasting) beans. You are well on to your journey of coffee flavors.
I would say your next step is (to take the grasshopper from my hand) to try a cupping party. I am sure you have some other coffee geek friends who would love to attend. Check out the Coffee Geek web page for a beginners guide to cupping. This party will get you more in tune with the underlying coffee tones, notes, essence, whatever you want to call it.
Now that you have the flavors in mind, try different ways of brewing coffee. Remember, the biggest difference in coffee taste is how fresh it is, Roast level, origination of the bean, and grind. Yes, the grinder is more important then the coffee maker. Get a GREAT burr grinder and then experiment with the 7 different ways to brew coffee (see terroircoffee.com for a great guide). You can even brew coffee with an old milk jug and your refrigerator. MMMMMmmmmm
Once you have all THAT done... Check out Sweet Marias for ways to roast your own coffee beans. You have not lived coffee until you smell your house the next day after roasting some beans. Sooo much better than candles

do you need to grind coffee beans before putting them in a coffee maker?
I want to buy a coffee maker for my dad for christmas. Do you need to grind full coffee beans before putting it in a coffee maker, or can you put the whole beans. I know they say it's better to grind it cause it makes better tasting coffee. But do you need to grind them?
The reason I ask is to know what type of coffee maker to get. There are some with and without grinders.. but then I could even get a seperate coffee grinder. I just don't know much about them. I'm not a coffee drinker.
It depends how your dad likes coffee. Just ask him Next time whether he likes pre ground coffee or whole coffee beans. He might even grind them at the store.
I was reading consumer reports magazine and they had a Cooks brand coffee maker for 40 bucks as a CR buy which is a good recommendation.
Another idea could be a burr grinder if he grinds his own beans. Good luck
