Many coffee lovers find themselves wishing for an easy and delicious way to make their own cold brew coffee. With the right supplies and a bit of know-how, anyone can make a tasty cup of cold brew.

What is Cold Brew Coffee?

Cold brew coffee is a type of gourmet cup of joe that has gained major traction over the last few years. Unlike regular hot coffee, cold brew starts with precisely ground coffee beans that are put into cold or room temperature and cold filtered water to make this cold brew a powerful concentration of caffeine.

The process takes longer than making regular hot coffee. But if you have the patience, your end product will pay off in spades. Making a cold brew is done simply by grinding the coffee beans, putting them into cold or room temperature water to steep, carefully brewing, and straining the coffee grounds through a filter.

You now have a delicious cold brew concentrate you can enjoy, or dilute the coffee with cold water if it’s too powerful for your taste. For those who love cold brew but need more time to make it themselves, many small batch and craft coffee shops now offer freshly made cold brew on tap all year round.

Why is Cold Brew Coffee So Much Better?

Cold brew coffee has been taking the world by storm lately, and for a good reason. It’s smoother, richer, and contains less caffeine than your average cup of joe, making it a better choice for those seeking a healthier caffeine fix. But why is cold brew coffee so much better?

For starters, the taste of the cold brew is brewed incomparable to regular hot brewed coffee. While traditionally brewed coffee can often taste bitter and acidic, cold brew boasts a smooth and sweet flavor that goes down easy.

Plus, since the brewing process of cold brew takes over a longer brew period (often 12-24 hours), more oils are extracted from the beans that give this type of coffee its robust signature flavor.

Cold Brew Coffee Recipe Tips

Creating a fresh cup of cold brew coffee is easier than it seems. If you want to make a batch of cold brew coffee that yields vibrant flavors, following a few simple but important tips will help ensure you get the perfect cup every time.

Firstly, fresh is always best, so grind your coffee beans as coarsely as possible for an optimal taste experience.

Next, adjust the ratios depending on how strong or mild you’d like your final result to be – the golden ratio of coffee is usually one cup of freshly ground coffee to two cups of water. Once you have your desired ratio set, let all the ingredients combine overnight, either in a clean jar with a lid or using a traditional cold brew coffee maker.

After straining out the grounds, you’ll be left with your fragrant and flavorful concentrate, so all that’s left to do is pour it into your favorite mug with some fresh cream and ice cubes, and voila.

Simple Steps for Making Cold Brew Coffee

If you’re not enthused by the extended brewing duration of cold brew coffee, keep going. You can easily prepare a large quantity at once and store it in your refrigerator whenever you want. This is how I do it:

Step 1: Coarsely Grind your coffee

For the perfect cold brew, you’ll have to start by grinding your coffee beans until they are coarse. Please don’t take it too far, and grind them finely into a powder. If you do not have your own coffee grinder, you’ll need to ask a customer service representative at a nearby retailer to bring their coffee grinder along. Otherwise, many local shops or coffee houses will gladly grind your beans right there on the premises.

This is important because you’d grind the beans much finer when making regular coffee with a coffee maker. That is different here, as you want confidence that the grind size will easily be filtered out after steeping. To make a big batch of cold brew, use two times more coffee than your usual brew ratio of one part coffee to two parts of coffee to water and grind the beans accordingly.

Step 2: Place the Coffee Grounds in a Large Mason Jar

The second step is to place the coffee grounds in a large mason jar. This brewing method begins with adding 1-1/2 cups of coffee grounds to your jar for every 3 cups of filtered water. Over time, this ratio will become ingrained into your process – making it easier and easier to make homemade cold-brew coffee.

After adding the grounds and water together, place a lid or coffee filter on top of the jar and give it a gentle shake. Covering it is essential so that none of your precious cold brews escapes; you want all that lovely flavor in your cup!

Let the coffee steep overnight or eight hours, then wake up to a delicious homemade cold brew perfect for diluting with milk or water as desired before enjoying. Cold brewing produces much less acidity than hot brewed coffee, so you can enjoy an amazing cup without any bitterness or added sugar, just straight-up perkiness.

Step 3: Strain the Coffee

Once the coffee grounds have been placed into the large mason jar with filtered water, it’s time to strain the coffee to ensure you don’t end up with a cup full of gravel at the end of your homemade cold brew coffee journey. This is an essential part of the brew method; straining the coffee ensures you are left with a smooth coffee beverage that is ready to be enjoyed.

Strain your cooling brew coffee through cheesecloth or place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and line it with paper filters. It’s super easy to make cold brew at home, and once your coffee steeps in water for 8-12 hours, straining will give you delicious coffee that can be served cold or heated up if desired.

Step 4: Your coffee is Ready to Enjoy

After doing all the above steps properly, cold brew coffee is ready to enjoy! Pour it over ice cubes with some additional water or milk to taste, and enjoy the delicious fruity notes that come from this brewed method.
